how to style a nightstand
It’s January which is a pretty cold and lazy month. The bustling holidays are over and, sometimes, colds or flus settle in causing us to spend more time in our bedrooms. Nightstands are focal points in the place where we sleep and there are countless ways to style them. Styling a nightstand can be pretty but it also serves a purpose as the place where we rest our coffee in the morning, a glass of water at night, books, hand lotions, reading glasses and more. There are four key components to styling a nightstand: lighting, artwork/mirror, storage and practicality.
Lighting
I use lamps in my house far more than overhead lighting. Really, the only place I use overhead lighting consistently is the kitchen and even those lights are all on dimmers so I control the level of output. Lamps give a feeling of warmth and softness to a space, two feelings you want your bedroom to exude. A bedside lamp should be substantial and sturdy so as to maintain its position on the nightstand. Another look I love is a wall sconce to bring visual interest upward. Lamps can be a variety of textures and materials from shimmering mother of pearl to an industrial cement base.
2. Artwork/Mirror
Layering a piece of artwork or a reflective mirror behind a nightstand lamp is such a beautiful way to bring style into the space. If the ceilings in your bedroom are particularly tall, you can use an oversized piece of artwork or mirror to draw the eyes upward and fill in blank wall space. Both sides of the bed should have the same piece of artwork (or a set) or the same mirror.
3. Storage
I love a nightstand that has storage space like drawers. My nightstands have two drawers each and those drawers are packed. Books, chapstick, lotion, my TENS unit, paper, pens, even old photographs. But, for those nightstands without drawers, or if you need even more storage space, baskets (with and without lids), trays (for remotes and books) and bowls (for jewelry) are great ways to increase your storage space.
4. Practicality
The nightstand is like a mini office space. It’s a place for your charging cords, maybe an Alexa, an alarm clock, books, reading glasses, a to-do list, a journal. The best way to arrange these items is to organize them in drawers with a drawer organizer.
