how to style throw pillows
The easiest way to transition your living room from one season to the next is by changing out the throw pillows. A few tips:
1. Vary the sizes: Use a mix of 24x24, 20x20, 18x18, 16x16 and lumbar pillows.
2. Vary the patterns: Mix stripes with solids and geometrics, just keep the colors neutral or in the same family (mixing 2-3 colors is ideal).
3. Vary the textures: Bastweave, linen, fringed edge, and shaggy pillows grouped together give visual interest and dimension.
4. Arrange them in odd numbers: I usually default to threes when decorating but, sometimes for a larger sofa, I need to use five or even seven.
5. Lots of pillows are needed on a sectional: Start with the largest pillow in the tricky corner (usually a 24x24 works best). Add a 22x22 to the corner and then to each of the outside arms. Add a 20x20 to the corner, and to each of the outside arms. Work in one or two more smaller pillows to the corner (either 18x18 or 16x16 pillows) and then finish it off with a lumbar pillow. The corner should have the most pillows!
6. Throw in a fun pillow or a seasonal pillow on an armchair: A small pillow with a saying like "home" or "Hello Spring" or "woof" (for the dog lover like me) keeps a family room casual and fun.
