bedtime prayers
When I was little my mom used to pray over us at night. Over the years, I have forgotten her exact words (I do recall "Mommy and Daddy love you so much" in there), but I remember the ritual, the kisses and the speed with which she whispered words while she repeatedly kissed my forehead.
After my first child (Eva) was born, I searched for the right words to say to her for bedtime prayer. The phrases in the prayer I recite each night to this day came together over many nights. It's nothing exciting, but my children have memorized our prayer and have come to expect me to whisper the words over them before they drift off to sleep. I pray that they will come up with their own bedtime prayer for their little ones some day.
Here's our prayer:
"Lord,
Please watch over Eva, Zoe and Nia (Erin and Charlie) and help them to sleep peacefully and restfully through the night.
Help them to continue to grow in wisdom and grace and to be in favor with God and man.
Help them to grow and to be healthy in mind, body and spirit.
Thank you for all of the blessings in our life.
We love you and our family so very much.
Amen."
